TVR - Where Do You Go My Lovely?

TVR was founded in 1947 by Trevor Wilkinson, under the name of Trevcar Motors. In 1954, Wilkinson changed the name of the company to TVR.
What most the people do not know is, that.TVR, even so sales have dropped dramatically, is still the third-largest specialised sports car manufacturer in the world, offering a diverse range of coupés and convertibles, most using an in-house straight-6 cylinder engine design, others an in-house V8.The first TVR was built in 1949. In 1953 the concept of glass-reinforced plastic bodywork over a steel backbone chassis was born, and has continued to this day. In the late 1950s, TVRs were powered by 4-cylinder engines from Coventry Climax, BMC or Ford.As with many other British sports cars, engine sizes remained under two litres, and all produced less than 100 bhp (75 kW). Most TVRs were sold in the domestic (British) market, although small numbers were exported. In the 1960s, American motor dealer Jack Griffith decided to put a 4.7 litre V8 from an AC Cobra he owned into a TVR Grantura, in much the same way that V8s were first transplanted into AC Cobras. In honour of Jack Griffith that TVR was named Griffith. The 1960s,70s and 80s saw a permanent change in engine manufacturers and it was not until the 90s when an in-house engine design was developed. The new engine,a lightweight alloy V8,was originally destined for the Griffith and Chimaera models, but development took longer than expected and it finally became available in the Cerbera and Tuscan race cars as well.In July 2004,Nikolai Smolenski bought the company from TVR enthusiast Peter Wheeler, for about £15 million and consequently lead it to and bought it out of bankruptcy. Some argue he did it on purpose. In October 2006 Smolenski announced that body production and final assembly for TVR would move to Turin, Italy, with only engine production remaining in the UK. In protest at this and to show support for the workers, a large number of TVR owners paraded through central London on 26 November 2006.Shortly after the announcement the company declared bankruptcy. In February 2007,Smolenski bought the company back and announced less than one week after reacquiring TVR plans to sell the company to Adam Burdette and Jean Michel Santacreu, who both have an intent of importing TVR's to the United States market. This might be the only way for the really exciting brand to survive.Take a look at some of the TVRs in todays newsletter and we are sure you will enjoy them. Coys-Auction: Legende et Passion

May 21st, 2007- Monaco

An important auction of competition cars and racing memorabilia
Established in 1846 and long renowned for its fine art, thoroughbred horses and country property sales, auction house Brightwells of Leominster has recently branched out into the business of selling classic cars and mororcycles. So far the firm has staged five sales since 2005, with the last three seeing over 120 vehicles consigned of which around 70% found new homes.

Top price at the last sale in March went to a 1927 Bentley 3-Litre
open tourer which fetched a well above estimate £101,200. Another Bentley also did exceptionally well, this one a Derby-era 1937 Park Ward saloon which fetched an extremely impressive £38,500, again well above estimate and beyond what the market generally considers to be the top price for one of these cars. Top seller among the bikes was a 1950 Vincent Rapide which fetched £18,100.

Brightwells next classic sale is on July 11th and entries are now being sought. Cars already consigned to the sale include a very rare 1913 Napier 30/35 and three very unusual barn finds – a 1933 Morgan Super Sports 3-wheeler, a 1955 Aston Martin DB2/4 and a 1935 Austin Ten Colwyn Cabriolet.

To enter your vehicle into the sale please contact James Dennison on 01568 611122 or email classiccars@brightwells.com
