Porsche 918 Hybrid-Supercar At The Geneva Show
by John Neff from Autoblog (www.autoblog.com):
Here you go, have your cake and eat it too. Porsche is looking to prove that the best of both worlds don't have to be mutually exclusive with the 918 Spyder debut this week at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Looking a bit like a Carrera GT evolved, the 918 Spyder is powered by both a 500-horsepower V8 and a pair of electric motors (one for each axle) producing an additional 218 hp or 160kW. At full gallop, the concept can theoretically reach 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and nip 198 mph on the high end. On the flip side, Porsche says it can also achieve 78 miles per gallon and emit just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
How does a supercar have such range? Well, the 918 Spyder concept is a parallel hybrid just like your mom's Prius (well not just like). That means the two powertrains, gas and electric, can operate together or separately to motivate the wheels into motion. There are no less than four modes that configure the powertrains for anything from maximum efficiency to maximum performance and everything in between. The E-Drive mode means pure electric power, and the car can reportedly last up to 16 miles on electrons alone. Next up is Hybrid mode, which is just what it sounds like and would probably be the mode for everyday around town driving. The Sport Hybrid mode again uses both powertrains, but tips the needle a bit more towards performance with most power reaching the rear wheels. Finally, the Race Hybrid mode means all systems are go for the lowest lap times possible (Porsche says it can do the Nordschleife in less than 7:30 minutes). There's an even a push-to-pass button (if only it were that easy) that adds a bit of E-boost on the straights and, of course, regenerative braking is present and accounted for.
Lastly, take a good look at the interior because Porsche says it offers a glimpse at future interiors from the automaker. Sounds good enough to buy so far, right? Too bad, because it's just a concept. These are the live shots of the 918 Spyder concept in Geneva, so sit tight.
And here is the sensational promo-video from Porsche : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTqWDR2X_SA
This the new 917 ! Its destined to change the way we drive sportscars...
Have a great week and enjoy our cars and news. We will assist you around the clock for your advertising needs ,so please don't hesitate to contact us by info@racingdeal.com
sincerely yours

Rare Porsche-Models At Retro Classics 2010
Taking a moment to look back often helps in times of crisis. Porsche, a long established company which has had its fair share of problems over the past year, will be introducing the new Boxster Spyder in 2010, a special model designed in the spirit of the Porsche 550 Spyder from the 1950s. A car driven back then by none other than big screen idol James Dean. The focus of the 320 HP-strong series model, the lightest in the modern Porsche range, is purely on the driving experience, the design and the engine. It will be on display in the Foyer/East entrance at Retro Classics, right beside its three legendary forefathers: a Rometsch Spyder first rediscovered in 2009 in a storehouse in Hockenheim, the Mathé Porsche or "Scrapflyer" and the Type 64 Berlin-Rome Car.
The Type 64 Berlin-Rome Car was developed in 1939 by Ferdinand Porsche according to earlier plans based on the KdF-Wagen (later to become the Beetle). A spectacular long-distance trip was planned for September 1939 to celebrate the design of this aerodynamic sports car, spanning from Berlin to Rome. This idea was shelved, however, with the outbreak of the Second World War that same month. Only one of the three automobiles manufactured in the Zuffenhausen factory before August 1939 survived the destruction that the war would bring. The car, today known as the "Ur-Porsche" or "Porsche Prototype" and insured for approximately six million Euro, will be on display at Retro Classics thanks to the Bavarian company HistoryCar.
The "Rometsch Spyder" took its name from the Berlin car body construction company Friedrich Rometsch. At the start of the 1954 racing season, the Berlin racing association, with permission from Porsche, used a vehicle built on a Volkswagen chassis with the technology of the 550 Spyder, a model not yet in production. That same year, the Rometsch Spyder took part in the Eifelrennen race on the Nürburgring track. At the end of the fifties, the car was converted into a sports car and sold. After decades spent in hibernation at Hamburg's Prototyp Museum, the lovingly restored Rometsch Spyder will be on display to the public for the first time at Retro Classics.
The Prototyp Museum is also home to the 1952 "Scrapflyer", the most successful Austrian racing car of the fifties built by racing driver and designer Otto Mathé. Powered by a Spyder engine, this vehicle is seen as a forerunner of the Formula 1 and Formula 2 racing cars built after 1960 in Zuffenhausen. Mathé, who lost the movement of his right arm following an accident, achieved over 100 national victories using just the one hand and won the title of Austrian Champion several times. The somewhat strange nickname of "Scrapflyer" given to his car came about when the engine cover, partially made of linen, caught fire and flew scraps all over the racetrack.
